In spite of the cosmetic and psychological benefits of breast reconstruction, fewer than 25% of women who have insurance do not consider the procedure right after a mastectomy. It was even found that black older women who are getting treatments from non-teaching and rural hospitals are even less likely to choose reconstructive surgery after their operation. A study has revealed that breast reconstruction enhances the patients’ sexual and psychological health.

Majority of women preferred to undergo reconstruction during mastectomy so that they won’t have to experience a second surgery later. The researchers were amazed to see that even if the use of instant breast reconstruction has increased in the last ten years, the rate is still so low. The study was conducted on more than 100,000 women (insured) who had mastectomy to remove cancer of the breast between the years 2000 and 2010.

The study revealed the following results among all other things:

1.    Generally, 42 percent of women less than 50 years of age and 17 percent of women 50 and above chose to have immediate breast reconstruction for the 10-year span.

2.    The rate of women who preferred breast reconstruction right after mastectomy improved at a constant rate of 15 percent in year 2000 and to 33 percent ten years later. The biggest increase was found to be among women under 50 where the percentage increased from 29 percent to 60 percent and for women who are privately insured (25 percent to 55 percent).

3.    Women who suffered with early breast cancer were more apt to choose breast reconstruction than those women who suffered with cancer that had already invaded the breast.

Women under private insurance are expected to have a larger portion of the cost of reconstruction covered. Although the cost of mastectomy remained the same over the ten years, the cost of breast reconstruction right after mastectomy has tripled. The costs are estimated to be $15,000 for mastectomy and plastic surgery using implants while it is $17,000 if the patient prefers to use her own body tissue for the reconstruction.
